Easy Ways to Save on Your Water Bill This Spring

With the winter weather finally phasing out, there’s no denying the fact you probably have a lot of catching up to do.

For example, you may need to get outside to mow the lawn, power wash your home, and make sure your property didn’t sustain any major damage during the winter months.

Springtime is also a great time to revisit your budget, all with an eye toward saving money.

Here are three suggestions for saving on your water bill this spring:

•    Don’t use a sprinkler system on your lawn (just yet). While this may be necessary during the hot and dry summer months, there’s no reason to jump the gun. If there’s rain in the forecast, keep your sprinkler system and hoses dormant for another couple months. This is sure to save you money. Consider collecting water by adding rain barrels to your gutters.
•    Check your toilets. Spring-cleaning will have you tackling a variety of projects around your home, with you spending quite a bit of time in your bathrooms. If you notice that your toilets are running for no reason, you may be surprised at how much water it is costing you. Most of the time a running toilet can be repaired by replacing a basic part. Even better, you don’t typically need a plumber to tackle this job.
•    Call your water company. Is it possible that something is going on outside your home that’s caused your bill to increase? For example, if you have a leak at the meter, there’s no way of knowing about it from the inside. Instead, you’ll need to contact your water company to assess the situation and provide a solution.

If you do these three things in the weeks to come, don’t be surprised if you find yourself saving on your water bill.

Almost my entire neighborhood has these rain barrels. I think they are great! I haven't set one up yet for us, but I plan to this summer.
