Awesome! My cousin and her husband built their home last year. They had to hire some of it out but did a lot on their own. The key is to check in often with the builders. Stop in to see the progress often too.

I know a couple that started building their own home and had to give up because they ran out of money. They ended up selling the house as-is and made back what they could. My husband and I have always wanted to try and build our own home, but it's just so easy to get carried away and spend more money than you should. How can you keep everything in check, without going overboard?

That's a great idea. Will the cottage be attached or completely independent? It sounds like a great way to be around family members without having to share the same space 24/7.

My husband and I are looking at building two new homes over the next several years. One will be a small cottage where we can house an elderly relative or two and one will be our main house. It certainly is a very exciting time, but it's scary, too.

Friends of mine just finished up building a huge new house. They both worked overseas for several years to raise the cash to fund it outright. How amazing is that?

It is very difficult to rebuilt a destroyed home.I can understand this because mine was destroyed in flood.I appreciate your courage and your desire to start with a new life.

My advice, stay on the contractors and visit often. They don’t come as good as they used to be (the workers that is). My family and I lost our home to a fire a year ago. We had to have it rebuilt from the ground up, so our place is now a "new build", several times things were done wrong, installed incorrectly etc., and after moving in we have had several issues. When your house is a new build, you may already know this but you have a one year warranty. My suggestions are, stay heavily involved, and don’t trust the crew always knows what they are doing, and for that first year take high advantage of the warranty and call them out the fix what ever goes wrong even if it’s minor.

Here over the last few months I have considered building a new home simply because rates are at an all time historical low, what I find most interesting is the first process of my journey was to list my rental and get it sold first, and wouldnt you know it, one of my renters have came forward and showed interest, I have checked into their financial back ground as well as their backer, so I think its safe to say the sale of my home will go pretty smoothly, and its all about timing, I have already met with the builders of my new home and have drawn up plans for my new home, I am going with an 1832 sq ft ranch custom built home, with all the upgrades and finishes I am looking at close to $226,000 to build including the lot, this has been so much fun for me, working with the sales agents, the architech, all of it, what I like most is I can go at my own pace, as the addition I want to build in wont be ready to build in until May! It felt so good to be able to hand them a cashiers check for $2,000.00 to get the ball rolling so to speak and to show them that I am ready and willing to help get this new journey of mine started. Even though I feel like I work hard and never get a break, to me this is my reward, it really puts things into perspective as far as finally getting to a point in my life where I can now move on to better things and truly start enjoying my life the way its supposed to be. 5 Years ago I was in such a financial mess there was no way I would have ever in a million years thought this day would come, its the help of people like you on here, the experiences we share, and the lessons we learn that really make a difference in someone elses life and gets each one of us a little closer to financial freedom and reward! Im so glad I can share my success with each and everyone of you, because after all, your my biggest success! Thank you!
