I'm sorry hjm331, applying for credit cards and getting approved is very addicting... I feel that I am on a roll here...

You're going to hate me... I wasn't able to follow your very sensible advice..
Temporary Credit Line. (What does it mean? Will I get a higher credit line once I receive my card?)

Now I'm reading thoroughly the posts in the forums, reviews and application status, and wished I applied for the Pre-Approved Capital One Platinum Mastercard instead...
hjm331, thank you again for your advises. I got to get a hold of myself and learn how to say "no" to store credit offers...

Krave, here are the answers to your questions. I will post my story tomorrow and just like you, I started out with a Bank of America Student CC Visa.

"1* do I have to call and ask for a CLI or wait? Stay away from CS by all means. They are reducing credit lines if you have high util. and/or insufficient income.
2* should i inform them of my employment status and request to have my CC converted to another BoA CC? As I mentioned above, DO NOT call them for any reason unless you lost your card or there are fraudulent charges on your account.

* What are my chances of getting approved for a Walmart Discover Card or the standard Walmart Credit Card? If I were you, I would NOT waste inquiries on store cards, they are less beneficial compared to bankcards ie. Visa, MC, AMEX. Discover is good but Visa/MC is accepted at more merchants than Discover so you're better off with a Visa or MC.
* How soon can I apply for a Walmart Discover or Walmart Credit Card? Can I apply tomorrow? You can if you wanted to but applying for too much credit will your score temporarily. With that being said, do NOT apply for anymore credit if you are going to apply for an auto loan/mortgage within the next 6-12 months."

Applying for a Chase or Citi student card would also be a good idea because they are both prime lenders and will grow with you as your credit improves.

Thank you so much hjm331! How did you know I'm planning for a mortgage within the next 6-12 months? :cheesing: I'm so glad I asked first, before heading out and applying for store cards. Maybe I just got excited with the promotions and discounts that come with store cards (like for Walmart, they say: "No Interest on Orders Over $299 if Paid in 12 Months*" - sounds really tempting...) but now I know I have to stay away from them.

I received an offer from Capital One saying I'm pre-approved for Capital One Platinum Mastercard weeks ago, but I'm having second thoughts on applying. I've been reading reviews about CapOne and most of them are not so good... Should I go ahead and submit my application? What are my chances of getting approved, now that I recently opened a store card? It says the offer will expire Dec 30 2009, should I let it pass? and apply after a few months?

Thanks for suggesting Chase or Citi Student card, but will I qualify? I'm not a student anymore... and when can I apply? I just got a store card yesterday... :( it was a wrong move on my part...

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my questions. I truly appreciate it. Have a nice day! :cheesing:

Hello! I'm new in this site, but I have been visiting this website (Credit Card Reviews and Application Status sections) to research and gain some knowledge regarding credit cards and increase the chances of getting approved. So far I have learned a lot. Thanks to all the people who take their time and post their experiences, comments and insights on credit.

I have some questions below, and I'm hoping somebody can help me out...

My first CC is Bank of America Student Visa which got approved last July 2008. I have a short credit history (approx. 1 year and 5 mos.), always paid my balance in full every month, but I never received a CLI. I'm currently working full time and not a student anymore.

1* do I have to call and ask for a CLI or wait?
2* should i inform them of my employment status and request to have my CC converted to another BoA CC?

I applied for a JC Penny Credit Card today (Dec 26, 2009) and got approved instantly with a $700 CL. Transunion score as of today: 676
I'm planning to purchase a laptop at Walmart...

* What are my chances of getting approved for a Walmart Discover Card or the standard Walmart Credit Card?
* How soon can I apply for a Walmart Discover or Walmart Credit Card? Can I apply tomorrow?

Thank you in advance for all your replies. :cheesing:

Pretty much everyone is seeing interest rate increases. I got so mad at Capital One I closed both of my accounts. One was at 11.9% CL $6,000 the other at 7.9% CL $10,600 where Capital One raised the interest to 17.9% and 24.9% so I said stuff it. First Premier is a bottom feeder and as soon as you have alternative Mastercards and Visas loose them. HSBC has serviced me for eight years now and I have an HSBC AX with $8K CL and an HSBC MC with a $6K CL and good interest rates (HSBC has worked with me) but they take a couple of years to four years for them to be convinced. I have a BK from 2001 and just got turned down for a Discover Card due to the BK that is eight years old (spot less record since BK). Who knows...?! Sock drawing cards is NOT the answer today. Issuers expect card usage so focus on the cards you want to build and over time forget the rest. If you need to do secured cards think Bank of America, Citii Cards, Wells Fargo as they are the big names. I would add Chase but they ??? have a secured card? Hmm... Chase does NOT like BK. Hope this helps. Oh, US Bank is also good and in the Big Name group.

i just got my change in terms notice from first premier for the card act that is becoming law in febuary. came with my statement this month. over limit fee is going away.... along with a couple others, like pay by phone fee. interest rate that was 9.9% fixed is going to 20.15% variable, ouch, more than doubled. and the credit limit increase fee is going up to 50% of whatever the increase is.

i have been planning on closing both of my first premier cards, i have stopped charging on them and will close when they are paid off.

I had 7;

Dillards
JC Penny
Walmart
Old Navy
Gap
Lowes (gemb closed when they were in their funky mood)
Hsn (change to another company I still have this card)

The cl was decreased on all except for JC Penny, they are all creeping back up. :white-flag:

Congrats on your approval for the BofA card. I have two BofA Visa cards, a Visa Gold and a Visa Signature. It seems that recently BofA has rebranded all of their non co-branded (NFL, Alma Matter etc) Visas as BankAmericards. I do not have any experience with the BankAmericard but I have been overall pretty satisfied with my Visas. I did have an issue in January when I applied for the Visa Signature-they took $5K from my Visa Gold (was $20K now $15K) to open the Signature. They (card services-aka fraud) asked a lot of very personal questions and a woman I spoke to in the Delaware office was the rudest, nastiest person I have ever spoken to in my life. So I guess to sum up, BofA has great products/rewards and I have great interest rates on my cards; however, their customer service (in my experience is the worst of the big banks) is downright awful. Also, be very careful in contacting customer service as they take any opportunity they can to reduce limits or close accounts. And if you apply for a second BofA card they could rake you through the coals like they did to me. Compared to others though, I came through pretty untouched.

Don't forget to enroll the card and your debit card in their Add it Up program.

Good luck.

Thanks for the information. Will check on that program.

What a roller coaster ride this last year has been for all of us. I opened a B of A checking account last year to use for saving money and other bills that I wanted to keep separate from my accounts with Chase. I didn’t get a CC from them because I have one with Chase and USAA accounts. Have been rebuilding for 10 years from a job layoff in 2002. B of A just approved me for the BankAmericard Power Rewards Visa Signature. There was a note when I logged into my checking account that it was available. Has anyone had any experience with this card? The B of A site says New next to these cards, I know this is the old name that was used many years ago. Thanks for any help. I have now worked to just have cards from Chase, USAA, B of A (new), and Macy's. I have sock drawer my 2 HSBC cards for over a year.

I think the limit is 5. I already had 4 cards financed by GE Moneybank and got declined last year for an AMEX Dillards card. When I got the letter the only reason mentioned something about maximum limit of credit issued by GE Moneybank something something something or other.
