ac0626's review: I applied for the Hooters Mastercard 5/2008, and was declined, per Merrick Bank for having a "recently opened Mortgage Account. This account has been opened since 2005, and is in good standing. My TU credit score is 660. When I applied I could not imagine why I was declined since the home page on Hooter Website states that the card helps to build credit. So, I waited for the explanation for denial and this was the reason stated. I wanted a Hooters card, but if this is reason for the denial then I will pass. I will have to live with the inquiry on my report. I read on this post that some other people were turned down for having a mortage. Perhaps, Merrick Bank has set number of years your mortgage account has to be open. I understand we are in a housing crisis, but my credit report does not reflect any negative activity.

Don't Give Up!!! on 2008-06-03
Well ok they didn't approve you so you might want to try capital one or Orchard bank but don't give up. If you like this card wait 6 to 8 months and try again
but its up to you, Good Luck to you.

I think the mortgage thing is a ridiculous reason for denial, but they must have their reasons. There are other cards out there that will build your credit. Capital One being the best!

I don't understand it either. If you've had your mortgage for 3 years and haven't missed a beat, what's a credit card with a $500 limit going to affect that? I guess a lot of the banks are paranoid at this point.

I don't know where you are in the rebuilding process or what your story is, but if your scores are 660 and up across the board try a prime bank. You may get lucky I've seen other people get approved in that range depending on their overall credit picture. Dont waste your time applying again with Hooters, they changed underwriters and that is there new thing not approving people with mortgages.
Now with that said give this a shot, if you have a 660 for sure on your transunion you should be able to get a wamu they always pull TU. They also have a card not listed call a mypoints reward Visa and folks are talking about it. I'm pretty sure its not listed here just the regular wamu so I'll email you the link.
Good Luck...

I have heard this from a few other members here, I think I better warn The Network about hooters and mortgages. This is just an awful poor excuse to offer credit to someone. What happens when we purchase a home after receiving Hooters? Do we get a closed account for it? Geesh!
