islandlo36's review: Went into Sears to make a small purchase. The cashier suggested I apply for the card. I did, and to my surprise, I was approved for a for a 600.00 cl. This is a huge surprise.

Congrats!
HSBC picked up with the Sears Mastercard after they found out that Citi was denying over 70% of the credit applications for possible new credit with Sears.
As some may know, Citi is not the easiest to be approved for, and I believe it might be the same thing as the Discover card, who bumps the application over to HSBC when denied for their card. Citi still offers the Sears Mastercard.
More approvals are being done in-store, thus more accounts. HSBC limits from what I've read are a little better than the standard from HSBC, and some have AF's, and others not.
From a business stand point, Sears should have done this long ago.

I'm a little confused, so HSBC has taken over sears alongside with Citi? When you're approved for the card, it should either say either HSBC or Citi right? Also, how can a person apply for Citis sears card but be approved for HSBC instead? Sorry for my ignorance, I'm still a newbie.

You'll know who's backing the card when you get it... It will say Citibank on the back of the card... The HSBC cards typically go to lower tier borrowers. So if you don't make the Citibank cut... Hsbc will pick you up. Sears doesn't care... They just want to get paid. The limits are usually relatively low... And geting cli's are few and far between and tend to be on the low end. But I guess it's a start... At sears tho you can easily spend 3 or 4 thousand bucks just buying stuff for your house so you kinda need a card with a decent limit... Don't think HSBC normally starts out with that much... Good luck in any event tho...

So it will specifically say either Citi or HSBC right?

Yes it will specify which bank. A couple of years ago I applied for the Citi Sears but was approved for HSBC Sears instead and found out immediately when I applied. The cli was an oddball amount also. I believe it was for $380. Right now I am up to a whopping $420. Really is a piece of crap card. Anyway good luck!

The papers I received from the Sales Rep says Citi bank and she did say Citi MasterCard. She said Hsbc only issued the Sears store card. I was approved on 9-28-10. Still waiting for my new card.

If it is a Citibank issued card it will have the Citi Arc on the front and the BIN will be 5121. If it is an HSBC issued card it will be called Sears Solutions MasterCard.
Thomas said that Sears should have offered the HSBC card a long time ago for the subprime borrowers... Actually, Sears should never had sold off their credit division-then they could have had full control in the first place.

I got my new credit card in the mail today guys. It is indeed a Citi Mastercard from Sears. I don't understand why everyone has been so skeptical. I have been taking great care with the credit I do have and that is why I've been rewarded. I've been using less than 20% of my available credit.

Part of the confusion in all this comes from the switching around between credit suppliers/banks (vendors). Often you will find one creditor managiing the department store cards while another creditor is handling the Merchant's Mastercard Visa or American Express accounts. To make it even more confusing, there has been some further switching since the economy dumped and the banks have shared some of what I just said was seperate and changes in who was doing what. Even between creditors from Canada to the US (i. E. Best Buy was in this one) and it goes on... So different people get cards from the same store at different times and the credit backer banks have changed (i. E. Target Stores). So people don't even realize all these changes have taken place and only know what they know. There that said, you are doing a great job of getting yourself back where you wanted to be. Congrats! Keep on truckin'.

I do apologize for being skeptical. Enjoy your new Sears card from Citibank. Citibank is a prime lender and very conservative in its lending practices. If you have earned a credit card from them, you must be doing pretty well. I again wish you continued sucess with your future financial endeavors.
